Cliff House Residence
Cliff House Residence is an 11,600-square-foot modern retreat, carefully integrated into the dramatic cliffs of Papagayo, Costa Rica. Designed to complement its coastal surroundings, the structure employs clean lines, cantilevered volumes, and an open-plan layout to maximize views and enhance the connection between architecture and nature.
The residence is defined by expansive glass façades, floating terraces, and open-air courtyards, creating a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. A carefully curated material palette—including natural stone, wood, and exposed concrete—anchors the design in its environment, while floor-to-ceiling windows frame panoramic ocean vistas and flood the interiors with natural light.
The architectural composition emphasizes horizontality, with low-profile rooflines and extended overhangs that provide shade and passive cooling. The main living spaces open onto a series of tiered terraces and infinity-edge pools, visually extending the structure toward the horizon. Structural elements, such as cantilevered platforms and recessed glazing, enhance the floating effect, creating a sense of weightlessness above the cliffs.
Cliff House Residence exemplifies tropical modernism, where contemporary design principles meet the rugged beauty of the coastline. The result is a refined architectural statement—a structure that respects its surroundings while offering a sophisticated and immersive living environment.
